April 2016 - USDOT Selects Columbus, Ohio A Top Finalist As The World's First Smart City!

Columbus, Ohio Could be the World's First Smart City!

With Congress' continued failure to pass any meaningful infrastructure funding, the U.S. Department of Transportation has joined forces with Google to develop a high tech program for the world's first smart city.  By using Google Maps, and possibly other GPS programs, the program will gather data to create solutions to many urban issues ranging from traffic management to pollution.

To help address transportation concerns, a smart city would have infrastructure and smart sensors in place ready to handle self-driving and connected vehicles, and integrate with Google Maps to monitor and direct traffic flows.  This infrastructure would have a significant impact on the supply chain.

The top seven finalists are currently developing proposals to introduce smart technologies into their cities.  The winner will receive $50 million toward implementing its plan!  The top seven finalists are Austin, Texas; Columbus, Ohio; Denver; Kansas City, Mo.; Pittsburgh; Portland, Ore.; and San Francisco.
